Sunshine Sis called m...Oh David, that’s too funny! Sunshine Sis called me to see if I was kidding or not about the PFD post. I simply replied: It’s the law! She laughed and laughed.

I was rather appalled by Dad’s reply about shallow rivers in Michigan and nude kayaking in Florida. I don’t believe I saw any verification to support those statements.

After a little surfing I found, and refrained from quoting, the United States Engineer’s Office report from October of 1888: “The Grand River, from Grand Rapids to Lake Michigan, for channel of navigable width, minimum depth of 10 feet.”

Pg 2206 United States Congressional Serial Set

http://books.google.com/books?id=hS8aAAAAIAAJ&pg=RA1-PA2206&dq=depth+of+grand+river+in+michigan

Notwithstanding it’s still the law to have a PFD stashed on board in MI. If you’re going to go out alone, you should definitely wear it properly & not just stash it.

In CT we have to wear it, which gets a little hot (and doesn’t leave a lot of room for fibbing to the authorities). I’m thinking the reason for this is that our waters are clean and survival after a dunking may be possible.

I read some alarming things about the Grand River in trying to ascertain the depth information. Listen you your younger sister this time, PFD or not, and stay in your boat!

This link is for some photos of the boys getting their kayak lesson at West Hill Lake in beautiful New Hartford, CT.

http://www.nolannetwork.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.ShowItem&g2_itemId=1067

Lisa ~ Connecticut Sis

P.S.
